On some of the blogs I frequent, there is something going around called a “Book Meme.” Here are the rules:
-
1.Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
-
2.Open to page 123.
-
3.Find the fifth sentence.
-
4.Post the next three sentences.
-
5.Tag five people.
OK, let’s play. I’m not going to tag five other bloggers, however. I want to know what you guys out there have sitting on your nightstands or coffee tables. Post your own book memes in the comment section. Here’s mine:
The nearest book to me now is Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. (My husband, Dennis, is reading this one.) I haven’t read it yet, but I will say that just about anything Steve Martin writes is genius. Here’s the required passage, which does not demonstrate above-stated genius. You’ll have to read more:
“One night, from my dressing room, I saw a vision in white gliding down the hall — a tall, striking woman, moving like an apparition along the backstage corridor. It turned out to be Priscilla Presley, coming to visit Ann-Margaret backstage after having seen the show. When she turned the corner, she revealed an even more indelible presence walking behind her. Elvis.”
